The System was instituted in 1972 by the pastors of 12 Woonsocket area parishes. The System was then composed of six schools; five (Msgr. Gadoury, Our Lady of Victories, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph and St. Ann's) were elementary schools, K-6 and the sixth, located at Holy Family, was a junior high school, grades 7 & 8. Over the years, different reconfigurations of grades were made, realigning the school buildings to be the most appropriate to meet students' educational needs.
In November, 2019 the GWCRS Board voted to merge Msgr. Gadoury Catholic Regional School into Good Shepherd Catholic Regional School beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. Good Shepherd now houses students in PreK 3 year old through Grade 8, as many Catholic schools in the area do.
Today, the GWCRS serves nine member parishes and serves Catholic and non-Catholic students and their families from nineteen communities throughout northern Rhode Island and south-central Massachusetts.
